Surpass the “Prototype”: a Modern Review on Liu Xie’s “Origin of Tao”

Qing-hong WANG

Abstract

Carl Jung had great intests on China’s “Tao”theory and tried to conclude it into the prototype-criticism theory. Liu Xie’s “origin of Tao”theory was based upon the exploration on literary origin of Chinese traditional culture ; while Jung’s prototype-criticism emphasized on the general resemblance of human’s cultural mentality, which was parallel with Liu’s idea. However, Jung’s prototype theory was based upon religion. He concluded the prototype from the deity’s image. While the “origin of Tao”theory described the basic conformation of human’s mental culture based on human and nature’s poetic relation. The ecoesthetics ideas contained in “origin of Tao” theory’s geniality to nature might be a effective prescription for the bogged down prototype-criticism.
Key Words: Origin of Tao, Prototype, Comparation, Nature, Religion
