http://cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/13337

About the motif of Shakespeare’s Sonnets, what prevails is that they were mainly written for Shakespeare’s friend and a dark lady. But this view is an misinterpretation of Shakespeare’s sonnets. In fact, Shakespeare’s sonnets express love and ode to truthfulness, benevolence and beauty, and eulogizes the plainness, loyalty and philanthropy derived from them by the way of personification. Besides, they castigate the falsehood, wickedness and ugliness, and enlighten the readers to identify good and evil and guide the common people to tend towards sublimity and holiness. Shakespeare’s sonnets imitate the nature and reflect the life. They are full of wisdom and philosophy, greatly enlightening and are of epoch-making significance.

Dong WANG

2024-02-262024-02-2628171310.3968/13340On the Interpreter’s Multiple Roles and Subjectivity: A Case Study of Bao Peng
http://cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/13348
During the First Sino-British Opium War, Chinese interpreters were in great shortage, primarily owing to the Qing government’s indifference to training qualified interpreting talents. Those in temporary employment had complex identities and played a variety of roles besides interpreting. A case in point is Bao Peng. He is one of the most noticeable interpreters in China at the time. He played five roles that helped to enhance his subjectivity in interpreting, namely a comprador, a messenger, a mediator, a negotiator and an adaptor. In this paper I make a probe into the five roles of Bao Peng and how they interact with one another and collectively enhance his subjectivity as an interpreter. My conclusion is that under unusual circumstances like that of the First Opium War, an interpreter with multiple roles tends to have influence and the ability to manipulate the dialogues and negotiations he is interpreting for and thus give play to his subjectivity.Zhen YUAN

http://cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/13343

This paper takes a bird-eye review of technology in interpreting studies (IS). The goal is to assess the advent of a “technological turn” by examining to what extent technology has transformed IS both within existing paradigms and expanded existing borders. The results show that although technology has permeated existing sub-disciplines in interpreting, their adoption and interaction between frameworks are not extensive enough. Therefore, although a technological turn is underway, it is far from complete.
Bin LIU

http://cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/13328

As one of the most significant British plays of the 1990s, Closer depicts a postmodern consumerist society where young adults suffer from the agony of love. In light of the inadequacy of current interdisciplinary studies on the play, this study is aimed at extrapolating the reasons for the characters’ failure to attain closeness in Closer based on Byung-Chul Han’s philosophy of postmodern Eros. As is manifested in the play, these young men and women are isolated and dissociated due to their egocentric tendency to appropriate and use the Other for their own ends; their substitution of uniqueness in the Other with self-imaged Homogeneity; the commodification of love to pornography in society which induces their fuzziness of true identify and incapability of differentiating between the real and the fake; and their complex play of power relations between two competitive sexes. Hopefully, this study can not only enlighten the contemporary humanity who still wish for a healthy and long-lasting relationship but provide some reference for subsequent scholars to conduct more diversified cross-field studies of Marber.
Huaiyu QIN

http://cscanada.net/index.php/sll/article/view/12901

Edgar Allan Poe’s life was plagued by melancholy and disaster, which is evident in all of his writings. Among the many other poets of his generation, his solitude and individuality set him apart from the rest. He gave the Gothic genre a completely new meaning, making it both dark and significant at the same time. First, as an overview is given, of the 19th century, Edgar Allan Poe, and the tragedies that influenced his poetry.
This study employs a comprehensive methodology focusing on the close reading of three of Poe’s well- known poems: “The Raven,” “A Dream within a Dream,” and “Alone.” By analyzing how sadness and sorrow are portrayed in these poems, the paper investigates the extent to which these emotions impacted Poe’s writing. The analytical approach involves delving into the thematic and stylistic nuances of the selected poems, shedding light on the intricate ways in which Poe articulates his emotions.
The purpose of this study is to tackle the sense of gloominess and sadness by employing textual and analytical approaches. The significance of the feelings of loss and sorrow in Poe’s writings is addressed, drawing connections to Poe’s life story. The findings demonstrate that Poe’s writings occasionally converge with personal catastrophes, tragedies from his own life, and stories about death sadness, and grief come together on multiple occasions over the course of his demanding career.
Concluding that sadness, sorrow, and everything that comes with it were indeed lurking in every one of his statements, this paper contributes to the existing literature by portraying the semi-autobiographical image of the author within the realm of his poetry. The textual and analytical approaches used in this study provide a nuanced understanding of how personal experiences influenced Poe’s poetic expression, enriching our comprehension of the intricate relationship between his life and art.
Mariwan HasanRayan KarimSara Muhsin
